Day 284: Timpani Times Two

I would have posted about this earlier but I had birthday posts. Last Saturday while most would bar hop on their 21st birthday, I went to the symphony orchestra concert here at the school. They were playing a double timpani concerto. There were two timpani soloists at the front and they were accompanied by the orchestra in this powerful work. Normally a concerto would have a piano soloist or a violin, but this concerto showcased the timpani giving it melodic lines and even cadenzas which is more than the standard timpani roll. There was a whole demonstration of the timpani mechanics at the beginning of the concert along with an interview with the composer and the soloists. It was a riveting piece of music where the timpani showed the orchestra who's boss. The second half of the concert was a gorgeous Schumann symphony. What a great way to spend my birthday!!
